Bardic Harp - Stringing

Stringing the Bardic harp is quite simple, but it must be done gently, because metal strings are very responsive to changes of tension.

Take string No. 1 and pass the loose end of the string through the elongated hole at the back and through the string hole in the soundboard.

Pull the string out and secure the loop over the hitching pin; pull tight.

Thread the loose end through hole in tuning pin and over bridge pin.

Pull tight and cut the string about 35mm above the tuning pin. Loosen the string and bend the end part (about 10mm) away from you at right angles to the hole in tuning pin.

Holding the tuning key in your right hand, place it over the square end of the tuning pin and turn it away from you and at the same time hold the string with your left hand in order to prevent it from escaping from the hole in the tuning pin.

Test the sound of your string from time to time until it is up to pitch.

Proceed in the same way with all strings. The writer is in favour of leaving the strings under tension for two or three days before attempting the final tuning.

More: Stringing and tuning are dealt with in more detail in their own section, 6.
